Who really is the monster in Frankenstein?

Frankenstein is a novel that was originally written in 1818 by Mary Shelley. It is simply put about a young scientist named Victor Frankenstein who gave life to a monster unknowing of the future consequences. Victor is the main protagonist in the novel, who came from a wealthy family from Geneva with many siblings. Being that the story takes place in the 1700’s, there are many aspects of the novel today’s reader will not be used too, such as Victor and Elizabeth (Victor’s cousin) fall in love and want to get married. Victor’s parents Alphonse and Caroline, also have a different relationship, being Caroline is Alphonse’s best friend’s daughter. Justine is adopted into the Frankenstein family, but is framed for the murder of William, the youngest sibling of the Frankenstein’s, and is executed. Victor soon leaves for school to further his studies and meets Henry Clerval who becomes his boy hood friend. Victor then creates life to a monster, unknowingly that this monster would ruin Victor’s life and many others, but who actually is this monster?

The monster terrorized many people in the novel. After realizing he was hideous and that there was no help for him, it was his way of adapting to this idea. He learned to speak, and to read, and almost the whole language just by spying on the family of Felix and Agatha. He had no sense of right or wrong because he even tried to help the family after finding out that they were poor. The day he finally presented him self to De Lacey, when the family entered, his appearance stunned them, and Felix attacked and drove the monster out. This led to the monster’s downfall, he started to act in monstrous ways that terrorized the people of Geneva.

The monster stumbled across Victor’s journal in the novel, revealing to him all of Victor’s plans, and why he was created. Angered by this, the monster wanted a companion just like him so he didn’t feel as lonely. In the Journal he learned his creators name, and where he was from. So the monster was off to Geneva to find him. On his travels to Geneva, the monster found a young boy, who just so happened to be Victor’s little brother. The boy had a picture of Victor on him. The poor child was soon murdered by the monster and the death was blamed on Justine. It was at this point the audience knew the monster was evil.

At the end of the day, the monster didn’t need to settle his anger’s in these such violent ways, however, the monster had no sense of right or wrong. Almost like a child, he was eager to learn. He soaked up the knowledge from the family in the cottage, but at the same time felt deceived because he was not human. He felt like the whole world was against him. He did not need to kill. He could have tried to befriend Victor and ask for his help rather than demand it. Yes the monster didn’t ask for the life he had, but he could have made it easier.

Valentine’s Day, Good or Bad?

February 14th, Valentine’s Day, this is the day many people around the world celebrate times with their significant other with the exchange of gifts and flowers. Valentine’s day is one of the most celebrated holidays. 62 percent of american adults said they celebrate it every year and spend collectively as much as 448 million dollars the week prior to Valentine’s day on candy! Although idyllic, the irony of Valentine’s day is how it started. It was created from Saint Valentine by his beliefs and traditions. Long story short it all started when Emperor Claudius II banned marriage for his military and claimed “single men make better soldiers”. Valentine, as emblematic as he was, thought the emperor;’s decision was cruel, diabolical, and defied him by marrying young couples in secret. Once the emperor found out about Valentine’s actions, he was sentenced to death, and was executed on February 14th, now know as Valentine’s day. It wasn’t until late 1400’s where Pope Gelasius made it methodical, and an official holiday. A lot of people think Valentine’s day is a great holiday,  but there is still many people that argue that it is not.

Valentine’s day is a great holiday in my opinion, single or not. It is always good to have that good, gregarious vibe feeling in the air. Like Christmas, it should lift people’s spirits. Valentine’s Day also has a lot of health benefits. The feeling of love, chocolate, and red wine “can play a role in keeping the blood flowing throughout the body”, stated by Dulce Zamora in the article Valentine’s Day: Good for the Heart. Celebrating Valentine’s day “is one of the best ways to pause, remember and be grateful for this one, wild, precious and amazing life we have been given”, as said by Kathy Gottberg in her article Celebrating Valentine’s Day or Just Another Consumer Holiday? It is good to show your significant other that you have vehement feelings for them, and dedicate a day to all the memories you have.

Besides all the love for Valentine’s Day, there are still many people who don’t feel the love so much. People argue that it makes life worse for lonely people, seeing everyone together and getting gifts while they get nothing. It may sound like just a hyperbole, but there is this reason, “As I grew older I came to feel a bit lonely when I didn’t get the gifts and attention that I learned to expect” stated by Dani- Elle Dube in here article Hate Valentine’s Day? You’re not alone in the anti-love movement. This is why Valentine’s Day is recondite for many people, and think that couples should celebrate their love on their anniversary. Fruitless results occur explaining the true meaning behind Valentines Day. However it is a very good argument as to why people hate Valentine’s Day, which is why we should remit those who have different views as we do, because everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

According to RetailMeNot.ca, 78 per cent of Canadians feel Valentine's Day is an overrated day.

Galileo Galilei; the Father of Modern Science

The telescope, maybe something we think as a cool little gadget we could buy from toys-r-us, has in fact shaped the astronomy industry giving scientists and astronomers the tools needed to discover planets, stars, and much more. This invention goes back to the 1500’s, to an Astronomer named Galileo Galilei. “Considered the father of modern science, Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) made major contributions to the fields of physics, astronomy, cosmology, mathematics and philosophy”, as stated in the article “Galileo Galilei” by the History.com staff. In 1609, Galileo built his first telescope in 1609, discovering major keys to astronomy such as four of Jupiter’s moons and the rings of Saturn. After multiple fruitless efforts, he finally got it right. Galileo was a very gregarious man when it came to his fellows scientists. “Galileo’s observations contradicted the Aristotelian view of the universe, then widely accepted by both scientists and theologians”, as also stated by the History.com staff. Many scientists today base their researches off his discoveries. “The spacecraft launched by NASA in October 18, 1989 was named in Galileo’s honor as the spacecraft’s mission was around Jupiter, a planet Galileo carefully studied with his telescope”, said by scientists Jody Bowie. Galileo finally revolutionized the scientific method, and how every scientist today approaches situations using those steps of the scientific method.

Thanks to Galileo, scientists today have been able to discover 7 new earth like planets 40 light years away. Based on the article by Nsikan Akpan, an astrophysicist by the name of Michael Gillon, describes these planets as, “habitable”. This challenges the theories of many minds thinking that earth is the only planet in the universe capable of human life. It also gives hope to those who in fact believe with a universe this big, there has to be more life out there somewhere. Scientists aggregated to say , We will be able to study the climates and chemical composition of the atmospheres, within a few years, we’ll know a lot more about these planets, and with hope, if there is life there maybe within a decade.” The fact that it will only take a few years to fully study 7 new planets 40 light years today is remarkable. Compared to years ago, who would think that science was this powerful today, and who knows where it will be in the next few years. In all, scientists are expecting these planets to have a similar pastoral land to earth’s, and hopefully we will be able to peregrinate there.

Ever since I was younger astronomy has always interested me and in school, other than recess, science was my favorite subject. I remember learning about Galileo in school, and how he improved science today. I think that it is amazing how far we can see planets and how we keep discovering new ones, the telescope while being an idyllic invention changed the world. Movies like “Alien” and “Armageddon” I think are the movies that really got me interested, and wondering if there is more life really out there somewhere.

Students falling asleep in class occurring more often…

Studies show that students in schools now a days are way more fatigued, stressed, and bored while in class. Based on the article by Greg Toppo titled, “Our high school kids: tired, stressed , and bored”, a brief online questionnaire was put out asking students how they felt in school. 8 out of 10 responses were negative. “Tired was most often invoked- 39% of students wrote that.” “Stressed came in second at 29%, Bored was third at 26%”. These astonishing numbers really prove that schools aren’t the most interesting thing to students anymore. “The message is clear: our high schoolers are none too happy, at least when they’re in school”, in cognate to the article. People are trying to push for school times to start later. Bonnie Miller Rubin’s article, “Fatigue a way of life for many high schoolers”, it states, “The later start is urged for middle and high schools so kids can get the 8.5 to 9.5 hours of shut-eye they need to grow and learn, the academy said. But only about 15 percent of U.S. high schools have an opening bell that rings at 8:30 a.m. or later, according to federal data.” Students getting more sleep, especially teens, is needed for the safety of students as well. “Just a little more sleep time also can reduce car accidents among teen drivers”, also said by the author. And finally the article states, “Over the past two decades, many studies have shown that a good night’s rest can have a profound effect on both emotional and physical health. Children who chronically shortchange their slumber are at risk for obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases — even Alzheimer’s, Owens said.

The reason why students are more sleep deprived is because there is so much technology influencing our youth that they want to stay up later. That is the major difference between our generations and our parents. Technology however doesn’t make us degenerates. It is almost an innate ability that we can’t control, teenagers of today don’t really know of a life without technology that our parents do. The engender of technology pulls students away from important tasks such as homework, and a lot of the times makes the body think its not tired even when it really is.

I myself, do also feel tired everyday at school. Yes, technology is important in my life, but like many other students, I’m very busy. I have before school and after school activities every single day. Later school times would really be beneficial for students like me. Any given night of me getting more than 8 hours of sleep is fictive, based on the time I get home from work. I also have no care to learn in school. My senior year has been nothing of a repeat of my past three years. This makes me bored and unable to focus. Schools don’t teach tools necessary to life, they teach what’s on the final exam. That is why it is hard for me to stay awake in school. Schools have transfigured into more of a chore. Until schools become more interesting, and start later, the nascent growth of students falling asleep in class will continue.

Fake News; destroying the foundation America was built on.

Fake News is spreading like like a wild fire. Taking over social media, even creating distrust in America’s elections. Fake news is exactly like it sounds like, fake news! Its news spread with no other purpose than to trick the readers mind and persuade them in a different direction.  In the article, “The very real consequences of fake news stories and why your brain can’t ignore them”, by. Nsikan Akpan, it says, “Fake news comes in many flavors, like satire or intentional hoaxes, but computer scientist Filippo Menczer said sensational news and social media campaigns filled with mistruths — like the PizzaGate story — started to surge on the internet around 2010.” One of the biggest fake news scandals, was the accusation of Hillary Clinton  was running a sex business through a pizza shop. This scandal led a 28 year old man to go into the pizza shop with an AR-15 and start firing upon innocent people. No one was harmed, however, the fake news almost caused many lives to be lost. Also in the article, “Fake news author is fired; apologizes to those ‘disappointed’ by his actions,” by. Joe Marusak, states another problem with fake news. It says, “A recent Davidson College graduate at the center of a fake news storm involving the presidential election has been fired from his job as a Maryland legislative aide and apologized for his actions late Wednesday”.

It is natural for numbers and statistics to grab anyone’s attention without it being their fault.
